Automating contrast injection for radiographers

Design Director: Research & Innovation Design for MRI injection interface

Project summary:

‘Contrast Protocol’ = a dose of contrast fluid given to each patient before a scan to help capture clear images. Too much can be dangerous, too little leads to poor quality images & re-scans.

The default dose for each scan could be optimized manually based on the patient’s size, history & health metrics. However, pressure to administer the contrast quickly using clunky, dated interfaces meant few Radiographers were able to regularly adjust the doses.

Bayer wanted to automate this protocol adjustment by allowing technicians to capture more unique patient metrics quickly, and letting hospitals create their own auto-adjustment rules.

Business goals of automating injection protocol

On-site research to understand the Radiographer’s workflow and challenges with contrast administration

Tested and refined
with Radiographers

Iterative design sprints helped us make design decisions like simplifying the primary focus on each screen, and creating 2 views for entering patient data (overview or step-by-step)

New interface for patient data entry & auto-adjustment of protocols

Data entry UI for Radiographers to increase customization of protocols by making it easy to enter more patient data, and apply adjustments automatically based on a hospital-approved rules engine.

New admin center for creating a hospital-approved rules engine feulling auto-adjustments.

The first step in scaling fully automated protocols was integrating a rules-manager into existing Bayer protocol systems, for hospital admins to build and manage simple protocol adjustment rules for 4 data metrics; eGFR, kVP, Catheters and injection site.
